Pneumatic Rivet Tools

As with most tooling, careful selection of riveters is required to ensure that the right tool for the job is found. Many tools look very similar, but certain considerations and operating factors should be evaluated in the identification of suitable rivet tooling.

Basic question - Will the riveter set the diameter and material of rivet required. It is quite common for air tools to be able to set a 5mm aluminium blind rivet, but only have a capacity of 4mm in steel and stainless steel blind rivets.

The key feature is the traction or pulling force developed by the riveting tool, a figure normally quoted in Newtons, a quick an easy method to compare tools.

Features

  • The most common additional feature is a mandrel collection system. On setting a rivet, the spent mandrel needs to be ejected out of the back of the tool. This is either achieved by tipping the tool backwards, allowing the mandrel to fall out, or by a positive vacuum system, that sucks the spent mandrel back into a container.
  • Body finish. Most air tools are constructed from aluminium castings, to improve operator comfort and improve durability, bodies are often covered in plastic or rubber.
  • Noise level. Noise suppression is a feature of many quality tools, improving operator comfort.
  • Air consumption. Compressed air is expensive, if this is a factor, some tools are fitted with cut off valves to ensure no air is wasted when the tool is at rest
